The Canton of Zurich is breaking the magic threshold of 100’000 Mobility users. Of course, the city is a stronghold in terms of the number of cars and locations – but the most active users live outside.
It started almost four decades ago with 17 members and one shared car. The ShareCom Cooperative was founded in Zurich Seebach in 1987. At the same time, a few friends in Central Switzerland had the same idea – ten years later, the two cooperatives merged and became Mobility.
In the meantime, car sharing has more than established itself in Zurich. As of January 2026, 100’000 customers in the Canton live from Mobility – that’s over a third of all users in Switzerland and an impressive milestone for the car sharing pioneer.
“With 900 vehicles, Zurich is the Canton with the most Mobility cars and a very important market for us,” says Michael Roth Gut, Head of Offer & Infrastructure at Mobility. “As more and more Zurich residents are using car sharing, we are significantly expanding the offer – not only in the city of Zurich, but also in other cities in the Canton.”
In keeping with the milestone reached, here are a few facts about Mobility and Zurich:
Almost 900 vehicles are placed in the Canton
111 of which are electric cars
and 68 vans
They can be found at 448 locations
Currently, the most popular car (measured by reservations in 2025) is the Toyota Yaris New Hybrid
Mobility operates in 74 Zurich municipalities (in almost every second one)
29 vehicles can be found at Zurich main station/Europaallee, the largest location
The oldest location in the Canton is Winterthur Railway Station/railway station car park (since July 1994)
More than 24’000 users from the total of 100’000 people are members of the cooperative
It goes without saying that the Canton of Zurich’s great love of Mobility mainly has to do with the city. Around 57’000 users live here and have more than 500 cars at their disposal. The average distance to the nearest location is only 250 metres. If you listen to music while you walk, that’s just enough time for one song.
In addition to the largest location in the Canton (Europaallee), the city also has the largest location that is not positioned at a railway station – at Helvetiaplatz. Zurich has an extensive public transport network and is making major strides in bicycle infrastructure. The perfect environment for car sharing. And if you still need a car from time to time, you get a Mobility.
Mobility is replacing 8’000 privately owned cars in the city of Zurich
The widespread use of car sharing has tangible positive effects – while one Mobility car replaces 18 cars on average in Switzerland, the figure in Zurich is 21. Extrapolated across the entire city, this results in almost 8’000 vehicles and parking spaces being avoided thanks to Mobility. This corresponds to an area of up to 100’000 square metres – or six times the size of the Sechseläutenplatz Square.

Affoltern am Albis beats everyone
However, the rest of Zurich’s municipalities don’t need to hide. After all, Mobility is present wherever more than 6’000 people live (with three exceptions). In addition, the place with the most active private users is not the city of Zurich. No, this prize goes to the small town of Affoltern am Albis with its five cars. “I am delighted that Affoltern am Albis is at the forefront of car sharing,” says Mayor Eveline Fenner. “It shows that we as an energy town don’t just talk about sustainability, but actively experience it together with our people.”
«“For the Canton of Zurich, car sharing is an important component of sustainable and efficient mobility.»Markus Traber, Head of the Office for Mobility of the Canton of Zurich
If Switzerland is to overcome its various transport, spatial and environmental challenges, even more people are needed to use car sharing to bridge the gap between public transport and cars. For this reason, Mobility is continuing to expand its offer – even in the Canton of Zurich. Last year alone, 40 new locations were added and this trend is set to continue.
Markus Traber, Head of the Office for Mobility of the Canton of Zurich, comments: “For the Canton of Zurich, car sharing is an important component of sustainable and efficient mobility. Offers such as those from Mobility are a useful addition to public transport, reduce the need for private vehicles and make an important contribution to relieve the burden on transport, the surroundings and the environment.”
The Canton of Zurich can therefore serve as a role model for the rest of Switzerland in this regard. From 17 to 100’000 users, it took almost 29 years. The question now is, how long will it take to reach 200’000?
A warm welcome to Canton Zurility!
