Welcome to the canton of Zürility!
28.01.2026

The canton of Zurich breaks the magic barrier of 100'000 Mobility users. Of course, the city is a stronghold in terms of the number of cars and locations - but the most active users live outside.
It started almost four decades ago with 17 members and a shared car: the ShareCom co-operative was founded in Zurich Seebach in 1987. At the same time, a few friends in central Switzerland had the same idea - ten years later, the two cooperatives merged and became Mobility.
In the meantime, car sharing has more than established itself in Zurich. Per January 2026 live in the canton100,000 customersof Mobility users - that's over a third of all users in Switzerland and an impressive milestone for the car sharing pioneer.
“With 900 vehicles, Zurich is the Canton with the most Mobility cars and a very important market for us,” says Michael Roth Gut, Head of Offer & Infrastructure at Mobility. “As more and more Zurich residents are using car sharing, we are significantly expanding the offer – not only in the city of Zurich, but also in other cities in the Canton.”
A few facts about Mobility and Zurich to mark this milestone:
Almost 900 vehicles are located in the canton
111 of them are e-cars
And 68 vans
They can be found at 448 locations
The currently most popular car (measured by reservations in 2025) is the Toyota Yaris New Hybrid
Mobility is available in 74 municipalities in Zurich (practically every second one)
At the largest locationZurich main station / Europaallee are 29 vehicles
The oldest location in the canton:Winterthur railway station / station car park(since July 1994)
More than 24,000 users out of a total of 100,000 people are members of the cooperative
Of course: The canton of Zurich's great love of Mobility is mainly to do with the city. Around 57,000 users live here, with more than 500 cars at their disposal. The average distance to the next location is only 250 metres. If you walk and listen to music, that's just enough for one song.
In addition to the largest location in the canton (Europaallee), the city also has the largest location that is not at a railway station: At Helvetiaplatz. Zurich has a dense public transport network and is making great strides forward in terms of cycling infrastructure. A perfect environment for car sharing. Because if you still need a car from time to time, you can take a Mobility.
Mobility replaces 8'000 private cars in the city of Zurich
The extensive use of car sharing has concrete positive effects: While 1 Mobility car replaces 18 cars on average in Switzerland, the figure in Zurich is 21. Extrapolated to the entire city, this amounts to almost 8'000 vehicles and parking spaces that are avoided thanks to Mobility. This corresponds to an area of up to 100,000 square metres - or six times the size of Sechseläutenplatz.

Affoltern am Albis beats them all
But even today, The other Zurich municipalities have nothing to hide. Mobility is present wherever more than 6'000 people live (with three exceptions). In addition, the place with the most active private users is not the city of Zurich. No, this prize goes to the small town of Affoltern am Albis with its five cars. “I am delighted that Affoltern am Albis is at the forefront of car sharing,” says Mayor Eveline Fenner. “It shows that we as an energy city don’t just talk about sustainability, but actively experience it together with our people.”
«Car sharing is an important component of sustainable and efficient mobility for the canton of Zurich.»Markus Traber, Head of the Office for Mobility of the Canton of Zurich
If Switzerland wants to master the various challenges relating to transport, space and the environment, it needs even more people to use car sharing to close the gap between public transport and cars. For this reason, Mobility will continue to expand its offering - also in the canton of Zurich. In the past year alone, 40 locations were added and this trend is set to continue.
Markus Traber, Head of the Office for Mobility at the Canton of Zurich, says: “For the Canton of Zurich, car sharing is an important component of sustainable and efficient mobility. Offers such as those from Mobility are a useful addition to public transport, reduce the need for private vehicles and make an important contribution to relieve the burden on transport, the surroundings and the environment.”
The canton of Zurich can therefore act as a role model for the rest of Switzerland in this respect. It took almost 29 years to go from 17 to 100,000 users. The question now is: How long does it take to reach 200,000?
Welcome to the canton of Zürility!
