"The range of the electric car dropped faster than we would've liked"

Maurus has been more active in how he gets around since he started using car sharing. And no wonder when he sometimes jogs 8 kilometres to drive an electric combi (estate).

Maurus, how often do you use Mobility and for what purpose?
To go to floorball training once a week. Occasionally for holidays, getting out into nature, visits or transporting larger items.

Why did you switch from owning your own car to car sharing?
I joined Mobility in 2012 and no longer had to commute far (to Sihlbrugg) but was able to comfortably cycle to the office through the beautiful city of Lucerne.

How do you usually get about at the moment?
By public transport and bicycle. Also using Mobility and occasionally my in-law's car.

What does the Mobility offer look like where you live?
In Sursee, where I live today, there are five locations with ten vehicles (two of them electric). Unfortunately, there isn't an electric combi (estate), so I sometimes jogged eight kilometres to Grosswangen to pick up the car.

Be honest: Do you ever miss having your own car?
Yes, when the rain's pouring down.

What has been the biggest positive effect for you since you started car sharing?
I've no need to own my own car and therefore don't need to worry about any more "pesky" maintenance work. The fact that I'm cycling a lot more, and therefore being more active in general, is just as important.

How do you think car sharing could be made even better?
Even more locations/availability and even more electric vehicles. I also think it's important that new customers are provided with even better, digital support when onboarding. After all, car sharing is a self-service product and as such, users should be properly supported.

«Tip: The Mobility app's live functionality gives you an even better overview of your reservation.»

What has changed in terms of your commute to work?
I now use public transport to get to work or often rideshare with a work colleague who also lives in Sursee and owns a car.

What would you do if Mobility didn't exist?
Then I would use the local provider ShareBirrer.

What's your best car sharing tip for beginners?

  • Very useful, especially when it's raining: Open the vehicle from a few metres away via Bluetooth.

  • Reserve the vehicle for enough time.

  • Activate the Mobility app's handy live functionality on your smartphone to get an even better overview of your current reservation and start up the app quickly and easily.

Have you had any memorable experiences using Mobility?
Yes, my first longer drive in an electric vehicle a few years ago, which I did in a Renault Zoe. We were not aware that the range displayed is based on driving behaviour during the last journey. So we happily set off for the Swiss canton of Graubünden. But as time went by, we realised that the range displayed was dropping faster than we would have liked. Thanks to driving more slowly and switching off the heating, we luckily made it to our destination with a few kilometres remaining (albeit in a stressed state).
