Michi
"Inspiring conversations arise when walking or cycling"
21.10.2025

Inspiring conversations among cyclists and a fuller wallet. Michi sees many benefits in being able to drive without having a car of his own. Not least because his first Mobility journey with Mobility ended up being a lasting positive memory.
Michi, why did you switch from having your own car to car sharing?
For two reasons: Because it is too expensive to own a car if you don't use it very often. And because it feels like freedom not to have to own a car, but to be able to use one whenever you want.
What concerns or worries did you have that turned out to be wrong?
That I'd need a car, but there wouldn't be a Mobility car available. But firstly, I almost never really rely on having a car and secondly, there was almost always one nearby.
How do you usually get about at the moment?
I cycle a lot more again. Sometimes also by public transport. The great thing about it is that I meet so many more people. If I meet someone when I'm cycling or walking, I can stop and end up having conversations that are often very inspiring (because the other cyclists are giving off good energy perhaps?).
What does the Mobility offer look like where you live?
There's a car approximately 300 metres away and three other locations with nine vehicles within a 1.2 km radius, so I have to hop on my bike to get to these.
How often do you use Mobility and for what purpose?
I use Mobility several times a month, for excursions into the mountains, for visits, for shopping, to go to football or floorball with the kids, and for skiing holidays.
Be honest: Are there situations when you miss having your own car?
Only when I have to leave and it's raining.
What has been the biggest positive effect for you since you started car sharing?
The knowledge that I always have access to car mobility. The positive effect on my bank account. That I'm cycling more again, with all the benefits that this brings.
How do you think car sharing could be made even better?
We should explain even better how car sharing works. Many people in Switzerland are familiar with the Mobility brand, but they do not realise how easy it is to use car sharing to their advantage. If we succeed in attracting even more people to car sharing, Mobility can make its network of locations even denser, which in turn can convince more people to use car sharing.
«I recommend a test drive before making your first important reservation. That will give you some security.»
What would you do if Mobility's offer did not exist?
I'd have my own car, probably through a car subscription. Perhaps I'd organise a private car share with neighbours, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
What's your best car sharing tip for beginners?
If you want to play it safe, register early and take an hour-long test drive before the first important journey. This allows you to experience just how easy it is to make a reservation and to be sure that everything will work like clockwork in an "emergency" situation.
Have you had any memorable experiences using Mobility?
I was caught by a speed camera during one of my first Mobility journeys back in 2002. I was travelling back to Zurich late in the evening with a young woman after a concert in Jona. We became a couple and have been married for 17 years. So I had a good reason to not be completely focused on my driving.
