Car sharing & housing construction: Save on parking and building costs thanks to Mobility
25.03.2025
A new study shows: Car sharing with Mobility drastically reduces the number of private cars, saves parking space and cuts costs. It makes sense for Mobility to integrate car sharing into its mobility concepts from the outset.
Key points at a glance
Car sharing saves space, reduces costs and makes sustainable residential projects more attractive.
According to a recent study, one Mobility vehicle replaces 18 private cars, relieves traffic and creates new spaces for quality living and recreation.
Construction projects, architects and housing cooperatives benefit if car sharing is incorporated into their mobility concepts from the outset.
Mobility also offers attractive solutions for existing housing estates wishing to integrate car sharing at a later date.
In urban housing estates and new-build projects with good public transport connections, car sharing plays a decisive role in reducing traffic and using space efficiently. A new study by BSS and Ostschweizer Fachhochschule OST shows that a single Mobility car replaces an average of 18 private cars in Switzerland. This has enormous advantages for residential construction: Fewer parking spaces mean more space for living and quality of life.
Space efficiency & cost savings: Save parking spaces with car sharing
A major advantage for building owners and housing cooperatives is the reduction in parking space required. The study shows that Mobility can save 40’000 cars or the equivalent of 70 football pitches in parking space throughout Switzerland. This significantly reduces the costs of constructing and maintaining parking spaces – especially in underground car parks, which require large investments. The electrification of parking spaces is also being optimised through car sharing, as fewer parking spaces need to be equipped with charging infrastructure.
Public transport as a key addition
The study shows that households with a Mobility subscription own significantly fewer private cars and at the same time rely more on public transport. Particularly in cities where public transport is densely covered, residents benefit from an ideal mix of car sharing and public transport. The combination not only reduces private motorised transport, but also relieves the urban space of unnecessary parking spaces.
Shaping mobility behaviour from the outset
Living concepts influence how people move about. If car sharing is integrated into new buildings from the outset, more people move in without their own car. Mobility offers a flexible offer for housing cooperatives that optimally complements alternative forms of mobility such as public transport, cycling and walking.
As a result, sustainable mobility behaviour has better chances from the outset. “Planning car-sharing spaces into the mobility concept at an early stage offers benefits – and benefits both sides,” says Magdalena Balogh, Head of Service Development at Mobility.
More living space thanks to Mobility
More space for residential and open spaces instead of car parks
Lower construction and maintenance costs due to reduced mandatory parking space
Greater attractiveness for tenants and owners thanks to sustainable mobility options
Cooperative approach & sharing concept
Car sharing offers a useful addition, especially for housing cooperatives: Mobility’s sharing concept fits in perfectly with the philosophy of cooperative housing. A shared mobility scheme not only reduces private cars, but also promotes the neighbourhood and the shared use of resources.
Car sharing as a major opportunity for existing housing estates
Mobility also offers flexible solutions for existing housing estates. The existence of car sharing makes a residential area more attractive, helps people do without their own car and has a positive effect on residents’ modal split in the long term. Fewer cars mean less traffic, less noise, better air and healthier living conditions. Or as Magdalena Balogh puts it: “It’s never too late to make space for car sharing so that it creates space for other needs instead.”
