There’s great potential for saving CO2 emissions when commuting and on business trips. That’s why the new MoveSmart Initiative aims to motivate many companies to make their mobility more sustainable. Mobility was one of the first to sign.
The MoveSmart Initiative was launched in Bern on 26 January 2026. It aims to make business trips and commutes – in other words, corporate mobility –moresustainable. At the start, 13 companies with more than 100’000 employees signed the Initiative’s charter and committed themselves to systematically promoting sustainable forms of mobility.
The objectives of the Initiative are clear: Reducing CO2emissions and a reduction path to “net zero” by 2050 at the latest. Anyone who takes part also undertakes to shift company mobility to sustainable modes of transport and to actively shape their own mobility management. In addition, the aim is to promote knowledge exchange between companies and reduce traffic in general.
13 companies are leading the way
The Mobility Cooperative also wants to be a role model when it comes to corporate mobility and has signed up – together with other pioneers such as Rivella, SBB, Lonza, Post and Helsana. Roland Beyeler, Segment Manager and Head of Sustainability at Mobility, explains why:“MoveSmart underscores our commitment to sustainably improve corporate mobility –Both for ourselves and as a reliable partner for the companies that we, as a car sharing pioneer, are supporting on their journey to a shared, sustainable fleet.”

MoveSmart is sponsored by Pro Velo Schweiz, the VCS Traffic Club of Switzerland and the Association of Public Transport (APT). “With this initiative, we are combining economic performance with more sustainable corporate mobility, thus contributing to effective climate protection,” says APT Director Ueli Stückelberger.
Reaching the next level in two years
MoveSmart’s most important tool is a national label system. This allows participating companies to make their activities visible. The principle is very simple: Anyone who commits to the Initiative starts at the Basic Level and must implement defined measures within two years. After achieving this, they reach the level “Engaged”. Additional measures and a CO2 reduction pathin corporate mobility are required for the highest level “Leading”with the target of net zero by 2040.
The MoveSmart Initiative has only just begun. But the sponsoring body has ambitious goals. For example, at least 500 companies are to be added over the next three years.
Flexwork, Half Fare and car sharing discounts
The Mobility Cooperative is already doing a lot when it comes to sustainable corporate mobility: After relocating the officesto Rotkreuz in 2017, flexwork was introduced. This allows employees to do their work where it makes the most sense. Commuter activity has already declined sharply.
Mobility also offers various incentives to ensure that its employees can travel sustainably: The Half Fare Travelcard is free, plus annual credits for public transport Travelcards. Anyone who regularly cycles to work receives a contribution towards service work. Employees also enjoy a free Mobility membership as well as discounted rates for their shared cars.

As the current commuter mobility survey amongst employees shows, 55% of commuting distances are covered by public transport, 8% on foot, by bicycle or e-bike, and 37% by car. Roland Beyeler says:“We are delighted with these figures, especially as we are seeing a move towards more public transport and slow traffic. This confirms that the incentives are working – and motivates us to consider further measures.”
Mobility also helps other companies
With MoveSmart, Mobility doesn’t just want to examine itself, but to advise and support other companies as part of the Initiative. After all: Many companies could use public transport and car sharing for a large part of their employee mobility. This not only reduces CO2, but also saves money.
