Keep or abolish minivans? The decision is clear.
25.02.2026
49 minivans will soon reach the end of their life cycle. This therefore posed a key question for Mobility: Should this category be replaced or abolished altogether? The answer to this question didn’t come from our meeting room, but from you, amongst other factors. And you were clear: The minivan has to stay.
A videographer loads up cameras and lighting equipment. A large family stows away their camping equipment. A music group lifts a double bass into the car boot. The minivan may not be fully booked every day – but when it’s needed, it’s really needed.
49 minivans approaching the end of their lives
Between 2025 and 2026, 49 of these vehicles will reach the end of their life cycle due to age and mileage. At the same time, production of the existing models has been discontinued. This raised a fundamental question for Mobility – will our customers still need a minivan in the future? Or can they switch to a different vehicle model? We wanted to know for certain.
Keep it or abolish it? That’s how we analysed it.
This decision shouldn’t be made in a meeting room, but based on facts. That’s why we looked at two perspectives:
Direct customer view: For three months, customers received a survey immediately after making their minivan reservation.
Key business indicators: In addition, we analysed utilisation over a period of five years. This includes the number of reservations, hours driven, kilometres driven, turnover and contribution margin.
This gave us an overall picture of needs and cost-effectiveness.
The survey provided a surprisingly clear answer
The results were clear. 20 percent of the respondents took part in the survey – including photographers with extensive props, large families with a lot of luggage and musicians with bulky instruments.
The results show that
in almost half of all reservations, 5-7 seatsare required.
60% (also) use the minivan because of the large boot.
The journeys are longer and more distant than average.
7 out of 10 customers really appreciate the minivan.
So the minivan is booked specifically. For large families. For house moves and holidays. And for club outings.
Also an economically efficient vehicle
The minivan also delivers convincing figures in business terms. Admittedly it has around a third fewer reservations than other vehicle categories. But at the same time, it achieves a comparatively high revenue for each vehicle. This means fewer individual bookings, but longer and further journeys.
What this means for Mobility
The decision to opt for a minivan is an example of one of Mobility’s fundamental aspirations – we take customer feedback seriously and consistently transform it into strategic decisions.
«For us, decisions are based on specific utilisation, verifiable figures and direct dialogue with our customers.»Dominik Moor, Project Manager Mobility
The findings lead to a clear decision:
We’re starting to evaluate new minivan models.
We’re developing the category systematically.
We’re investing in an offer that is demonstrably appreciated.
The minivan will thus remain part of our fleet – thanks to you.
