The Eichberg above Lake Hallwil is the perfect spot for taking various short walks offering wonderful views of the lake and the Alps. In the Cabrio-Restaurant Eichberg you’re then tempted with seasonal dishes, primarily from own organic farming. Culture lovers can visit the nearby Hallwil Castle, beckoning visitors with its audio guide and cosy courtyard bistro. You can reach the free women’s and men’s bath in Seengen in approx. 15 minutes on foot from the castle. A dip in the lake will keep you cool on warm days.

From Brülisau, the cable car takes you up to 1,794 metres above sea level to the high mountain station of the Hoher Kasten in just eight minutes. A 360° panorama of Alpstein, Lake Constance and the Alps awaits you during a culinary stop in the revolving restaurant or on the approximately 15-minute European loop trail. If you’re in the mood for a bit of an adrenaline rush, you can hike from the Hoher Kasten in approx. 50 minutes to the mountain inn Ruhesitz. From there, a 3 km descent on a scooter back to Brülisau – a fun alternative to the mountain railway. You can hire a scooter and helmet from the mountain inn.

The main village of Appenzell will enchant you with its richly painted facades along the main street and the characteristic “Tafeen” (colourful metal signs) on the houses. Just under an hour from the border is the spa town of St. Blasien with its striking, domed-roof cathedral. From the Mösle car park in Menzenschwand, just a 7-minute drive from St. Blasien, the Menzenschwand Goat Trail leads you on idyllic paths through sparse forests and open pastures to the Menzenschwand waterfalls.

From Basel to the Petite Camargue Alsacienne

A few minutes’ drive from Basel is France’s first national nature reserve, the Petite Camargue Alsacienne. At this location on the border triangle between France, Germany and Switzerland, various types of terrain along the Rhine support an exceptional diversity of bird species. On several loop trails you can see herons, storks and similar. Information, art exhibitions, a barefoot trail and picnic areas await you at the visitor centre in the lockkeeper’s house.

The thermal bath in Charmey with its wonderful mountain backdrop is just a few minutes’ drive from Gruyères.

The Lake Klöntal is a classic amongst photogenic mountain lakes. The circular hiking trail offers 12.65 km of stunning views without any major differences in altitude (145 metres). It’s worth packing your bath things and towel and cooling off in the Alp Fjord. A Glarus Beggeli pastry is a must as a snack. Whether the Gabriel or the Reichmuth bakery bakes the better pastries remains a local point of contention to this day.

Cool off in the Graubünden gorges

Two gorges await you in the Viamala Valley. You descend 359 steps into the heart of the famous Viamala Gorge. Below, rock basins formed by the water and memories of muleteer times await you. The Roffla Gorge at Andeer was developed at the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by the Niagara Falls. A leisurely 30-minute stroll takes you to the rock gallery behind the waterfall, which was built between 1907 and 1914. For connoisseurs, it’s worth stopping in Fürstenau on the way back. In the Casa Caminada star chef Andreas Caminada will round off the day with a culinary treat.

A cheesy trip to Saignelégier

Saignelégier is home to the spicy Tête de Moine cheese, which originated in the Bellelay Monastery in the 12th century. In the village cheese dairy the exhibition is open with optional tasting until the end of August from Mondays to Fridays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The gently undulating plateau with its pastures and Freiberger horses is the perfect place for short walks. A walk around the nearby Lake Etang de la Gruère, a moor lake, takes just under an hour.

Ibexes on the Brienzer Rothorn

The highest peak in Canton Lucerne, the Brienzer Rothorncan be reached directly by cable car from Sörenberg or on foot in just under three hours from Rossweid. In addition to a magnificent panorama of the Central Swiss Alps and Lake Brienz, ibexes often await considerate visitors on the summit ridge. On Sunday mornings, early risers can enjoy a sunrise cruise followed by a breakfast buffet.

From Oberrickenbach, a cable car takes you up to Bannalp, one of Nidwald’s most beautiful high-lying valleys. The Melchsee-Frutt alpine plateau boasts turquoise mountain lakes and an impressive mountain backdrop. The Fruttli via ferrata is one of the simplest in Switzerland and is therefore also suitable for an initial cautious first try. If you prefer something more leisurely, you can explore the three lakes Tannen, Melchsee and Blauseeli or enjoy a leisurely hike.

Day trip in the footsteps of beavers

The tranquil wine-growing village of Rüdlingen is located directly on the Rhine at the cantonal border between Zurich and Schaffhausen. This is the starting point for the beaver trail through the habitat of this nocturnal rodent. Ten information boards along the 4 km route clearly explain how the animals shape the Rhine landscape. In between, benches on the riverbank invite you to linger and watch the world go by.

Insight into the daily life of the monks at Lake Sihl

The baroque Monastery Einsiedeln with its magnificent basilica is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Switzerland. From Mondays to Saturdays at 2 p.m., the Einsiedeln Tourist Office offers a 90-minute guided tour of the Monastery. This gives you a unique insight into the Monastery church and the abbey library. Just a few minutes away, Lake Sihl invites you to take a refreshing break. The largely flat waterfront path around the lake is ideal for a leisurely walk and a dip in the water.

Hike through the Tüfels Gorge

The wild and romantic Tüfels Gorge near Hägendorf crosses 32 bridges and footbridges along the Cholersbach stream. After a little more than 2 km, you reach Allerheiligenberg on the “Heaven and Hell” themed trail. It’s the same way back to Hägendorf, which is particularly pleasant on hot days. Once you have returned your car in Olten, you can wind down the day at the Aare Bistro.
