Car sharing in the Holliger housing estate: Find out how Mobility promotes sustainable mobility and enables residents to live in a resource-efficient way.

Low-car living, but there are still cars

Gastronomy, daycare centre, kindergarten, neighbourhood shops, an inner courtyard with an exposed urban stream: The non-profit housing estate not far from Bern's Inselspital is diverse, participatory, connective and sustainable. It is exemplary when it comes to mobility. A reduced number of parking spaces and a bicycle parking hall with around 200 spaces symbolise a low-car mobility concept. Two residential buildings are completely car-free, although one of them rents parking spaces to its residents in justified exceptional cases. The vehicle ownership of all residents is surveyed every two years.

Co-operatives promote car sharing

Car-poor does not mean car-free. Thanks to local car sharing, the need for a car can be met at any time. Five co-operatives provide residents with a free Mobility annual membership. Tenants receive a discount from a co-operative if they take out a subscription.

"Car sharing is part of the overall mobility concept in Holliger. The provisions are set out in our rental regulations. All residents undertake with their signature to comply with these. The vehicle ownership of all residents is surveyed every two years."

The property developers have nothing to do with the Mobility cars. Mobility provides the vehicles and the location, reservations are made via the Mobility app, and Mobility takes care of maintenance, cleaning and any repairs to the vehicles.

Holliger: Non-profit site in Bern

in 2012, the city of Bern bought the site from Energie Wasser Bern (EWB) when the kerich utilisation plant was moved to another location. The city handed over the site to six non-profit Bernese housing cooperatives. The estate comprises a total of six houses, five of which have been completed to date. Around 380 adults and 180 children live in around 300 cooperative flats.
